The Handle
Magnolia (ho wood) is one of the most popular woods used for traditional Japanese wa handles - lightweight, with an extremely low percentage of etheric oils and resins, it leaves almost no smell or taste on the hand. The surface is smooth and comfortable, and the wood will darken naturally with use, developing its own character over time. The octagonal profile sits naturally in the hand and provides excellent rotational control during cutting. The red pakka wood ferrule is a natural material that behaves similarly to wood in terms of expansion and contraction under different temperatures, ensuring a stable, long-lasting fit. Suitable for both left- and right-handed users.
Care & Maintenance
- Hand wash only - do not soak or submerge
- Dry immediately after washing
- The wood will darken and develop character with use - this is normal
- Handle fitting should be performed by a professional knife sharpener if you are not experienced with handle replacement
