Why Your Whetstone Needs Flattening

Over time, every whetstone wears unevenly - typically developing a concave hollow in the centre where most sharpening strokes land. A concave stone can't maintain consistent blade contact across the full length of the edge, leading to uneven sharpening and a blade that never quite gets as sharp as it should. The Shun Leveling Whetstone fixes this quickly - soak both stones in water, then work the ridged leveling stone across the whetstone surface in circular or figure-eight motions until the flat surface is restored. The grooves collect the slurry as you work, making the process faster and cleaner. Flatten your whetstones regularly and they'll last significantly longer.

How to Use

• Soak both the leveling stone and whetstone in water before use
• Place the whetstone on a stable surface
• Work the ridged side of the leveling stone across the whetstone in circular or figure-eight motions
• Continue until the whetstone surface is flat - check by looking across the surface in raking light
• Rinse both stones and dry after use
