Sharpen with a True Japanese Natural Stone - Amakusa
Amakusa stones are quarried on Shimoshima Island in Kumamoto Prefecture - one of Japan's most celebrated sources of natural sharpening stone. Beautiful in appearance and highly effective in use, they offer a natural alternative to synthetic whetstones with excellent feedback and a consistent cut.
Specifications
- Origin: Shimoshima Island, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan
- Available variants:
- Red Amakusa - approx. #500/#800 grit - 205mm x 75mm x 43mm - approx. 2kg
- White Amakusa - approx. #1000/#2000 grit - 200mm x 70mm x 40mm - approx. 1.2kg
The Red Amakusa is a coarser stone suited to reprofiling and setting a new edge, while the White Amakusa sits in the mid-grit range - ideal for refining an edge after coarse work or maintaining a blade that's already in good shape. Both stones are natural, meaning each piece has its own character and slight variation in grit. A great entry point into natural Japanese sharpening stones.
Care and Maintenance
- Soak before use - especially the coarser Red Amakusa
- Use with water throughout the sharpening session
- Keep the stone flat - lap regularly on a flattening stone if needed
- Rinse and dry after use - store in a dry location
- Handle with care - natural stones can be brittle
