Sabre Paris POP Cutlery

Sabre Paris was started in 1993 by Francis Gelb, a goldsmith from Paris, and his wife Pascale. The idea was simple: cutlery didn't have to be formal or dull. Coming from a family of goldsmiths, Francis brought a craftsman's eye to something most people took for granted, and the result was a brand that's spent over 30 years doing things its own way.

Everything is hand-assembled near Paris. The blades are made in France from stainless steel and carbon alloy. The handles are solid acrylic, dyed all the way through so the colour doesn't fade or chip. It's a well-made thing that happens to come in a lot of colours.

The POP collection

POP is Sabre's most straightforward collection. Round handles, clean lines, no pattern, no fuss. It comes in 16 colours, ranging from soft ivory and grey through to black, with plenty of brighter options in between. The idea is that you choose what suits your table, or mix colours across place settings if that's your thing. Sabre actively encourages it.

The handles are comfortable to hold, the weight is right, and the stainless steel takes care of itself. These are everyday pieces that work as well at a casual weeknight dinner as they do when you've actually made an effort with the table.

What we carry

We stock a select range of POP pieces at Chef & A Knife. If you're looking to set up a full table, we offer 16-piece and 32-piece sets, which covers four or eight place settings respectively. We also take custom orders, so if you want a specific colour, a particular combination, or something put together for a gift, get in touch and we'll sort it out.

It's worth noting that mixing colours across a set is very much the done thing with Sabre. If you want every person at the table to have a different colour, or you want to run two complementary shades through the whole set, that's exactly what the brand is built for.

A few practical notes

Sabre recommends hand washing where possible, though the pieces are dishwasher safe on a gentle cycle. The acrylic handles are solid and durable but prefer not to sit in very hot water for long periods. Treated reasonably, they'll last a long time and look good doing it.

If you've been looking for a way to bring some colour to the table without it feeling like a gimmick, POP is a good answer. It's well made, it's French, and it's the kind of thing people notice and ask about.
